Movie Review: Grandma’s Boy (2006)

3.75/5

Made by the Happy Madison gang minus Adam Sandler, this comedy features most of the “bit” actors for their films, as well as a young Jonah Hill. A older stoner professional video game tester ends up evicted from his apartment and moves in with his adorable grandmother and her wild roommates, all while pretending to his colleagues to be living with wild younger women. The plot sounds dumb, and it is, but this movie is FUNNY. Some incredible jokes and sequences (the house party is just the best), mainly men’s toilet and stoner humor, really make up for the lack of a cohesive plot. Almost all the traditionally bit actors really shine in larger roles, and Doris Roberts is absolutely delightful as Grandma Lilly (special mention to her sassy roommate Grace, played by Shirley Jones). Also, his movie co-stars my on-screen crush, Linda Cardellini (you might know her as Velma, or Hawkeye’s wife in the MCU), as Samantha the consultant, who comes to help the team get their delayed game back on track. She gets kind of a raw deal with the jokes, but gets at least a bit more character development than the average comedy romance character. Basically, it’s a B comedy film starring lower-rated actors, but it’s still quite a hoot.
